Resurrecting Calfee: Former Pulaski School Will Help Preserve Black History as a Museum (via Dogwood Magazine)
PULASKI-It’s a wintery morning in the rural Virginia town of Pulaski and Dr. Mickey Hickman is standing at the intersection of Randolph Avenue and Corbin-Harmon Drive. Suddenly, a white pick-up truck pulls up to the red light. Hickman smiles and shouts to the driver of the truck. “Hi Scotty! We got a new street sign!” Hickman pulls out his iPhone and snaps a picture. “Look at it. It’s so shiny.”

First, I encourage everyone to travel to Randolph Ave. and the West Main portion of town to see the results of a recent Pulaski Town Council action. The Council in their wisdom has changed the name of the street formerly known as the “Magnox Drive” to “Corbin-Harmon Drive” at the bequest of the CCCC and friends.

When Calfee Community and Cultural Center (CCCC) opens to the public it will be “more than a museum” about Calfee Training School, according to Mickey Hickman, president of the center’s board of directors.
Governor Northam Awards Grants to Fauquier, Pulaski, and Roanoke Counties to Advance Local Agriculture and Forestry Initiatives
CATAWBA—Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Fauquier County, Pulaski County, and Roanoke County will each receive a grant of $20,000 from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Fund Planning Grant program to support local agriculture and forestry initiatives amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These grants will be matched by more than $67,000 in additional funding from the applicant communities, non-profit organizations, and local governments.

In early 2018, a group of Calfee Training School former students and their families, the Town of Pulaski, the Pulaski County YMCA, the Pulaski County Department of Social Services and local parents of young children began working to acquire and renovate the historic African American school.
The Uncovered History of the Calfee Community & Cultural Center
In 1860, almost 90% of the United States' African-American population was still enslaved. At the beginning of the Civil War, Virginia significantly contributed to this percentage by reaching the highest number of slaves in its history, with 400,000. Today, this means the descendants of 4.4 million American people are able to trace their heritage back to slavery. Pulaski County,Virginia is no different.

Little has been written about the early civil rights movement in western and southwestern Virginia. There is an especial paucity of information about the efforts of African American Southwest Virginians to improve their educational opportunities.
