Juneteenth Cornbread Competition


Calling all chefs and bakers!

Do you have an amazing cornbread recipe that people rave about?

The Calfee Community & Cultural Center, in collaboration with the Wilderness Road Regional Museum, is hosting a CORNBREAD COMPETITION on Sunday, June 18, 2023, in Newbern, VA, as part of the Juneteenth Celebration!

Rules:

  • It is FREE to enter your cornbread recipe! Tasting tickets for People’s Choice voting will be purchased by event attendees.

  • Individuals, teams, and restaurants are allowed to compete.

  • Register by emailing bintivillinger@calfeeccc.org

    • Include:

      • Your name;

      • Whether you are a professional or home chef/amateur;

      • A photo of yourself/team, if possible (or a logo, if you are a business);

      • Your recipe.

  • Day of registration is possible with information printed on paper.  Advanced notice of participation is highly recommended for planning purposes.

  • You or a representative must be present 6/18/2023 from 1:00 pm-4:30 pm to set up your public tastings and stay for the winner announcement. Set up is from 1:00 -2:00 pm. Tasting will begin at 2:00 pm and winner will be announced by 4:30 pm.

  • All competitors must supply at least 100 tasting size portions. The Calfee Community & Cultural Center will provide single tasting cups that you will fill during setup. You may bring additional supplies such as spoons, napkins, trays, etc. as needed for your tasting. You may make more than 100, if desired, to supply more tastings.

  • All entries must have cornbread mixture and no alcohol may be included.

  • Any recipe that includes nuts or other popular allergens must have a sign indicating allergy warning and ingredient.

  • Your recipe must be original. By participating, you are allowing Calfee Community & Cultural Center and Wilderness Road Regional Museum to share your recipe with the public.

  • Only one recipe per entrant.

 

Judging

  • Judging will occur in two ways:

    • People’s Choice Winner:

      • The public will be able to purchase a cornbread tasting ticket. After tasting cornbread, they will vote for their favorite.

    • Lena Huckstep Winner:

      • A panel of judges will be formed from Calfee Training School Alumni to judge based on how close the recipe resembled the recipe used by Lena Huckstep, the school’s kitchen cook. 

Prizes

  • Two prizes and bragging rights will be awarded per the above categories.

Neither Calfee Community & Cultural Center, nor the Wilderness Road Regional Museum is responsible for providing the tastings or for containers left on the property. All competitors and tasters release any Calfee Community & Cultural Center and Wilderness Road Regional Museum from any liability regarding this competition and the Juneteenth Celebration event.
